Indian Chief Miantonomi agreed to accept 144 fathoms of Wampumpeague. Wampum was traditional shell beads that were created by the Eastern Woodland indigenous tribes. This was used as the payment for the land, but this was not done with ease. Two of the surrounding tribes claimed that Miantonomi sold the land without their consideration. The case was taken to Boston, put under Massachusetts rule. A militia was sent to arrest Gorton and his supporters, leading to all but three of them surrendering. Speaking in terms of economic demographics, Warwick has ten very large employers. The largest employer of people is Kent Memorial Hospital.
