Arkansas, home of the fur trade and a wide variety of revolutionary people ranging from author and activist Maya Angelou to the founder of Wal-Mart, Sam Walton.
While Arkansas has birthed many amazing people, it also has some of the most diverse and beautiful mountains, forests, caves and rivers in the whole United States of America. The northern Ozarks combined with the southern plains of Arkansas leads to a wide range of options when it comes to visiting Arkansas.
In fact, a study done in 2010 by the US Forest Service concluded that a staggering 56% of Arkansas is forested. These forests are largely made up of tall, old oak trees, long and skinny pine trees, or in the Ozarks, white cedar trees.
If you’re more of a river or lake person I’ve got great news! Arkansas has over 2,000 lakes across the state along with 9,000 miles of rivers, perfect for kayaking or boating.
Arkansas’ Department of Parks identifies 18 rivers and creeks that are great for anything from a leisurely canoe trip down a river 100s of miles long, or an intense whitewater rafting adventure in some of the most beautiful parts of the state.
Ancient History in Arkansas
Blanchard Springs Caverns in Stone County was originally called the Half-Mile Cave when it was first discovered in the ‘30s. As it turns out there is actually over 8 miles of traversable area in the cave and three stories! Inside of this cave archeologists found a 1,000-year-old skeleton, believed to be a part of one of the local Native American tribes, with a cracked skull, cracked rips and a cracked leg. To this day nobody knows how he entered the cavern!
Arkansas is filled to the brim with Native American history and more specifically, burial mounds. In southern Arkansas the oldest known burial ground has sit for 3,500 years. Not all mounds were used for burial purposes, though. Some of the uncovered mounds have just been filled with dirt and plants. Archeologists still aren’t sure why exactly these were built, but the common belief is that the Native American tribes used these mounds for ceremony or simply as a communal gathering spot.
Protecting History
Many of these mounds have actually been destroyed by either vandalism or people developing houses or stores on top of them.
Pollution is a problem Arkansas has faced for over 60 years now. In 1949 the “The Arkansas Water and Air Pollution Control Act” was enacted making it illegal to dump sewage, industrial waste or any other waste in an area where it can leak into and pollute the local waterways.
Actually, Arkansas has some of the strictest medical waste disposal regulations in all of America. Of course, this is for a good reason: to keep the environment clean and safe.
MedPro ensures all rules and regulations are followed in every state, and we take extra precautions to make sure our drivers are not only safe, but that they are following the rules to a T.
