5 Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Medical Waste Disposal Company

medical waste disposal company

All medical waste disposal companies are not created equal.

As with any type of service, some businesses are better than others. While it may seem simple to tell a good company apart from a bad one, sometimes the reasons are quite subtle. By asking the right questions you can get all the answers you need to make an informed choice about which medical waste disposal company you should choose.

Some of the questions are things you should ask potential service providers and some are questions you need to ask yourself.

So what are some of those questions and why do we suggest you ask them?

1) Is this potential medical waste disposal company friendly, helpful and do you trust them?

This may seem like such a simple question but if you don’t ask yourself this, you may wind up with a cranky customer service person or a pushy sales rep trying to sell you more.

Think back to your first interaction with this potential company. Were they friendly and did you enjoy speaking with them? Did they provide you with clear information and answer your questions? These are all things that show how this company will act in the future. Hopefully you would never run into an issue such as a missed pickup or issue with your bill. However, if you did it would be nice to know that you have a friendly customer service representative waiting to help you out and take good care of you and your practice.

2) What will they charge if you have more medical waste than expected?

Lots of things can happen that may suddenly increase the amount of waste you have at your facility. If you suddenly have more than you expected, how will the company deal with this? Will they charge you an additional fee? How much is that fee? This is something you should find out in advance so you can be prepared instead of suddenly being charged twice your regular price or something outrageous if the issue presents itself.

3) Are there any additional fees or hidden surcharges?

This is one of the most important questions you can ask. When you receive a quote from a company for medical waste disposal, this may or may not be the price you will end up paying. Many companies will add on additional fees such as stop fees, fuel charges, energy fees, environmental fees, and more. These fees add up quickly and before you know it you could be paying much more than you were originally quoted. To be sure you are getting an accurate quote you can fairly compare to other companies, be sure to ask about any and all other fees that may be added to your quote to get your final cost.

4) If I make changes to my service agreement does it extend the length of my contract?

This is a question people don’t usually think to ask until it is necessary. However, you can save yourself a lot of headache by asking potential companies about this before choosing one.

Sometimes, some changes may take place in your practice that cause a change in the amount of medical waste you are producing. Maybe you start a push to get new patients and the amount of waste increases because of this. Perhaps you decide to start closing your office on Mondays and now you are producing less waste than you used to. Either way, you may want to make changes to your service agreement to be sure that you are getting the appropriate number of boxes and the right frequency of pickups for your practice. This way you will avoid unnecessary potential charges for extra pickups or empty boxes.

By making changes to your service agreement, sometimes your contract can be extended or even start over completely. Be sure to find out of this will happen with the company you’re considering before making your choice.

5) How will I get a hold of someone if I have a question or concern?

The bigger the company, the more professional they may seem… but the harder it can be to get to talk to a real person as well. If you run into an issue with your medical waste, you want to be sure that you can get it taken care of quickly and easily with as little frustration as possible. By making sure you have the correct contact information handy for you to get in contact with a real person who can help you or answer your questions, your medical waste management will be much more enjoyable!
